The Refractories Engineer position at Boral Cement is aimed at overseeing both major shutdowns and day-to-day refractory planning and execution. The role focuses on ensuring the safety, environmental compliance, quality control, and financial aspects of refractory installations within the Cement Division. As a key point of contact, the engineer will collaborate with internal stakeholders and contractors to build strong relationships and identify cost-efficient, growth-driven, and process-improving opportunities.

Your day will involve:

  • Refractory Design & Estimation: Design and estimate refractory applications, including the use of bricks and castables.
  • Shutdown Planning & Budget Management: Plan major shutdowns, coordinate contractors, and manage budgets related to refractory work.
  • Procurement & Material Selection: Procure refractory parts based on delivery schedules for shutdowns and select materials and designs using CAD systems.
  • System Inspections & Failure Analysis: Inspect refractory systems, analyze failures, and identify needs for repair or replacement.
  • Maintenance & Performance Monitoring:
    • Develop and implement maintenance plans to prolong the lifespan of refractory materials.
    • Monitor new installations and repairs to ensure quality and performance.
  • Reporting & Data Analysis: Analyze data and generate detailed reports on the performance and condition of refractory systems.

Candidates must be willing to travel to other sites (including Marulan and Malden) occasionally.  The position emphasizes safety, environmental responsibility, and maintaining cost-effective, high-quality work practices.

What are we looking for?

  •  Technical background: Experience with refractory systems is desirable but training can be provided.
  • Qualifications: Trade or engineering qualifications in mechanical, chemical, refractory, or industrial fields.
  • IT Skills: Proficiency in MS Project, Excel, Word, and AutoCAD.
  • Industry Experience: Experience in industrial sectors such as cement, steel, petrochemical, power, lime, non-ferrous metals, or similar.
